Woods and Forests
The woods and forests of Perthshire are unique, boasting noteworthy trees such as the world’s highest Beech hedge at Meiklour, Europe’s oldest tree, the Fortingall Yew and Britain’s tallest tree, a Douglas Fir in the Hermitage, wonderful places to spend time with your family, friends or alone.
They hold a strength and atmosphere like no gallery or museum but are galleries and museums in their own right. Perthshire is surrounded by woods and forests, both ancient and new providing a welcome escape from the noise and distractions of our busy daily life.

In Spring countless daffodils line paths in the forest and children celebrate Easter by taking part in the many activities on offer, Summer is vibrant and lush, green and heady.  In Autumn, fungi of all colours and shapes take form and can be seen on the forest floors, on dead wood, and even high up in the trees. Be sure to know how to correctly identify them before collecting as some mushrooms can be poisonous.  When you know enough to be confident, armed with a good mushroom guide book, basket and stick you may be lucky enough find some highly prized and edible species. In Winter the land takes on the form of a white crystal wonderland and wrapped up warmly a snowy forest walk presents a whole new experience.

All year round, Blairgowrie plays a welcoming host inviting visitors of all abilities to follow the Ardblair Trail. There are picturesque walks along the tree-lined River Ericht, and the Ardblair Trail winds through splendid mature oak woodland.  Nearby Alyth, on the Cateran Trail offers a peaceful resting spot in the form of a shady glen known as the Den of Aylth to the west of the town where ash, oak, birch and beech thrive.

Seductive landscapes throughout the region abound with most areas open to visitors.  Enjoy cycle trails, marked forest and hill routes, riverside and gorge walks in all seasons.

Festivals that celebrate the forest are many and the ‘Enchanted Forest’, part of the Pitlochry Autumn Festival is one of the most unique using light, colour and sound to create a spectacular night-time experience in the woods that magically enthrall children and adults alike.
