Visit Royal Deeside

Royal Deeside is about an hour's drive from Blairgowrie along the A93 National Tourist Route through the dramatic mountain scenery of Glenshee (various stopping places with walking & mountain biking trails in Glenshee).

Your first stop is likely to be Braemar, home of the famous annual Royal Braemar Gathering and the Braemar Highland Heritage Centre, which tells the history of the village. Nearby Braemar Castle is open at weekends throughout the season.

A few miles east from Braemar lies Balmoral Castle, which has been the Royal Family's holiday home since Victorian times. Part of the castle and the gardens are open to the public, although they are closed when the Royal Family is in residence. However you can visit Crathie Church, where the Royal Family worship, and Royal Lochnagar Distillery.

Look out for the "By Royal Appointment" plaques in the bonnie neighbouring villages of Ballater and Aboyne.

You can return by the spectacular Cairn O' Mount road through Fettercairn and Edzell which joins the A90 Aberdeen - Perth Road.
