Scotland has delivered a wealth of literary heroes and heroines throughout the ages and modern authors and playwrights continue to produce a rich and diverse choice of literature to the present day.

Famous and ‘well kent’ names include Robert Burns, the famous Scottish Bard, Robert Louis Stevenson of ‘Treasure Island’ & ‘Kidnapped’ fame, the latter conceived in The Hawes Inn, South Queensferry, an inspirational setting if ever there was one. Sir Walter Scott, truly one of the world’s greatest literary figures, author of such masterpieces as Rob Roy & Ivanhoe. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sir James Barrie, (Peter Pan), all took their inspiration from the history, people and land that is Scotland during their lifetime.
John Muir from the coastal town of Dunbar deserves a respectful mention as being the father of Conservation having been responsible for the founding of the great Yosemite National Park in California. There is a Museum in his memory in Dunbar, south of Edinburgh, as well as a country park and superb walks on the East Lothian Coast. His writing is truly inspirational and sings from the heart and soul.
Modern Scottish writers continue to draw readers from around the world. Amongst those with an immense following are Irvine Welsh, Trainspotting is one of his most successful works; best selling crime author Ian Rankin, loved by millions of fans for ‘Rebus’, and Scottish poet and playwright Liz Lochhead & Iain Banks, the Wasp Factory. Not to forget of course JK Rowling’s magical Harry Potter Books. Loved by children of all ages, Harry’s creation was penned in the coffee shops of Edinburgh!
Scotland will always remain a rich source of inspiration and creativity for aspiring writers to put pen to paper and allow the words to flow forth for the enjoyment of others. We hope you enjoy your time in Scotland, you may find the creative impulse within you stir encouraging you to try a spot of writing yourself
