Recreational Ice skating dates back to Victorian times as many wonderful paintings pay testament to in winter scenes depicting top hatted gentlemen and ladies in long dresses and buttoned coats with fur muffs gliding on the shiny surfaces of frozen Lochs. It is believed the sport of ice-skating originated in Scotland where skates were made using wood and bones for blades.
Glasgow’s George Square also has an outdoor rink around the Christmas holiday period and if you are heading north into the Highlands, head to Falcon Square in Inverness for the Winter Festival where an outdoor rink is at it’s heart along with a full programnme of winter festival activities.
