Recreational Ice skating dates back to Victorian times as many wonderful paintings pay testament to in winter scenes depicting top hatted gentlemen and ladies in long dresses and buttoned coats with fur muffs gliding on the shiny surfaces of frozen Lochs. It is believed the sport of ice-skating originated in Scotland where skates were made using wood and bones for blades.
Nowadays the Scottish winters are never really cold for long enough to create the thickness of ice required to skate on a Loch but you can opt for a day of fun in an Ice Skating rink where all the family can be assured a great day out as well as some fine rosy cheek enhancing exercise!

Ice Skating
At certain times of the year in some parts of Scotland it is possible to Ice Skate outdoors on rinks that are especially frozen for the purpose of this wonderful pastime.
One such rink is to be found at the East end of Princes Street in Edinburgh, site of the Edinburgh Winter Wonderland Festival.  There is a traditional Christmas Market, where you can wrap cold hands around mugs of hot mulled wine after your skating and then enjoy a trip on a giant Ferris wheel. The Ice rink is lit up and there is no more beautiful setting to skate in than that of the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.
